June 8 – We’ll begin our Cape Cod adventure as we head north with our first overnight stay near Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.
June 9– We will continue north today following a scenic route to Mystic, Connecticut. Here we will visit the popular whaling village of Mystic Seaport with time to stroll through the many Maritime exhibits. We will arrive in Hyannis later today to get checked in and settled for the next four nights at our lovely hotel. Welcome to the sandy shores of Cape Cod. Extending some 70 miles into the sea, the Cape is home to both natural beauty and quaint colonial villages. You can walk pristine beaches, revel in the arts and culture and reclaim childhood memories of seashells, sandcastles and saltwater taffy. A welcome dinner will be included this evening. (D)
June 10 - Breakfast included at your hotel this morning. We will once again meet our local guide as we start out with a tour of Hyannis including the John F. Kennedy Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, Hyannisport and a view of St. Francis Xavier Church (the summer parish of the Kennedy Family - please remember this is an active house of worship and there could be certain times we cannot enter the sanctuary). We will then travel historic Route 6A, the Old King’s Highway, a scenic byway winding through centuries of Cape Cod history. It winds past hundreds of historic structures which characterize its early development. View the Eastham Windmill, a Cape Cod Lighthouse and drive through the Cape Cod National Seashore area. Sand dunes and the ocean surround you as you approach “Land’s End” - Provincetown. You are now at the extreme tip of Cape Cod. Formerly known as the “Province Lands” the pilgrims landed here first before they decided to settle across the Bay in Plymouth. Take some time to enjoy the wonderful variety of restaurants, shops and galleries that make this artists/fishermen village so unique. This afternoon you may choose to board an excursion vessel for an amazing experience of Whale Watching. On this exciting cruise, you will travel into the natural habitat of a diverse marine environment including birds that migrate here from all over the Atlantic and fish which use these shallow waters to feed. Try to spot Humpback, Minke and Fin Whales going about their daily business. An on-board naturalist will introduce you to everything you see and will answer any of your questions about the whales, birds, fish and lighthouses. For anyone not wishing to go on a whale watch cruise, you can stay on dry land and enjoy a Dune Tour where you will ride along the shoreline of the protected lands of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Your guide will point out the “dune shacks” where famous artists and writers became inspired to create their art. Dinner is included this evening at Provincetown. (B, D)
June 11 - Breakfast included at your hotel this morning and we are then off for a cruise to the stunning Nantucket Island. Upon arrival on the island, your guide will point out the restaurants, galleries, shops and museums that are within walking distance to the dock. You will also enjoy a complete Nantucket Island tour with lunch and shopping on your own. (Please wear comfortable walking shoes today for the cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks that line the beautiful Nantucket downtown area - we want you to enjoy everything to its fullest). Later today, we will arrive back on the mainland later today with dinner and entertainment included tonight. (B, D)
June 12 - Breakfast is included at your hotel this morning. We will meet our professional local guide as we board the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard for a trip across the water bringing us to this old scenic paradise. Upon arrival we will board a local bus for a sightseeing island tour where you will learn about the history and lifestyles of the islanders as you pass through Vineyard Haven. There will be free time for lunch and shopping in the historic whaling town of Edgartown and you can complete your day on the island in Oak Bluffs. You may choose to stroll through “Cottage City” which includes brightly painted cottages and decorative gingerbread trim. We will return to the mainland where a wonderful lobster dinner is included (there will be an alternate entrée available for those not wanting lobster). (B, D)
June 13 - Breakfast is included at your hotel this morning. Today is our last day in the area and we will enjoy a visit to America’s Hometown - Plymouth. Admission is also included today at the Plimoth Plantation, the first permanent European settlement in southern New England. It is the site of a living museum dedicated to recreating 17th century life ways in the New World with the Wampanoags. Step back in time as costumed interpreters portray residents of the colony. As one of the country’s first settlements it is well known in the United States for its historical value. Picture stops will be made at the Plymouth Rock, the traditional site of disembarkation of the Pilgrims in 1620, Cole’s Hill and at the Forefather’s Monument, the largest solid granite monument in the United States. It stands facing the harbor, welcoming all those who come by water. Admission is included to board the Mayflower II, a reproduction of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to the New World. Learn about the 1620 voyage, the perils of maritime travel, and the tools of the 17th century navigation. Lunch is on your own in downtown Plymouth. We will then bid farewell to this area as we depart with sand in our shoes and seashells in our pockets ! Our last overnight will be spent at Scranton, PA with check in to our hotel this evening. (B)
