The concept of a “Chautauqua” is to make widely-available education that involves the mind, spirit and body, unrestricted by age, and inspired by a community devoted entirely to the pursuit of learning. Chautauqua Institution is a community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York State that comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 visitors will stay at Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and events – all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village. Founded as an educational center for Sunday school teachers, the New York Institute has become known for its top-notch entertainment and family atmosphere.

The little “downtown” area is still much as it was in earlier years – enjoy browsing the shops in Bestor Plaza. Stroll by the Victorian gingerbread cottages lining the wooded street sloping down to the Lake, all reminiscent of small-town America nearly a century ago, or rent a bicycle and relive your childhood fun! A shuttle can take you around some areas if you prefer to ride. Retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor wrote, “This place embodies the life we wish we could always live”. Walk the winding brick sidewalks as the shade of huge maple trees renews your spirit.

We’ll arrive at Chautauqua early afternoon and check into our home on the grounds, the majestic “Athenaeum Hotel”, where you’ll revisit the lifestyle of a bygone era. Included is one night’s accommodations at this grand historic hotel, dinner, breakfast, lunch, one headliner concert, one afternoon concert, plus free time to enjoy any way you wish – so many choices, including relaxing on a beach along the waterfront, if that’s your preference! All passengers are provided the opportunity to go to the Sunday morning church services on the grounds with several venues to choose from. *There is a dress code for dinner.

The concert performers have not yet been announced at this writing, but they are always top-notch entertainers, and as soon as we have the names, we’ll be glad to give them to you if you call the office. But no worries – they are always outstanding, Past performers have included Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Straight No Chaser, Bill Cosby, Tim Conway, The Temptations, Vince Gill and The Lettermen, just to name a few!
