October 11 – Today we head south to Winchester and home of the annual Apple Harvest Festival at the Orchards. Here you will find lots to do with craft vendors, farm market, huge bakery, apple cider donuts, wagon rides and more. Enjoy lunch on your own at the festival. Winchester is Patsy Cline’s home town and we will then visit the nearby Visitor Center to view a video on the area and enjoy Patsy Cline memorabilia along with other exhibits of the area. Our tour guide will then meet us and take us on a fascinating guided driving tour of the area including history and narration and interesting background about Patsy Cline’s home town. (Patsy Cline resided in Winchester from 1948 – 1953, longer than at any other house associated with her in the Winchester and Nashville areas…and she returned to it intermittently until her singing career began in 1957. The tour will include drive-bys of her home, radio station where she once sang, and more. Her house serves as a proud testament to Patsy’s love of family and her influential relationship with her mother who helped launched Patsy’s career. We will then check in at our local hotel for the evening before enjoying an included dinner at a popular local restaurant. (D)
October 12 – Breakfast included. Our lovely fall tour will continue on to Luray Caverns, some of the most beautiful and breathtaking caverns in Eastern America which has become and internationally acclaimed destination for visitors. This "must see" U.S. Natural Landmark is a paved and well-lit attraction with walkways that lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high. Enormous chambers are filled with towering stone columns and crystal clear pools. Luray Caverns is noted as being a "fairyland in stone" by National Geographic and renowned as one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. There will be time for lunch on your own after the tour. We will then enter one of the most scenic driving journeys in the U.S. – Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park. There is nothing like Skyline Drive in the fall – be sure to bring your cameras! Skyline Drive is not just a road through the park…it is a way to experience it. You will pass rock cliffs and vistas, hopefully see various wildlife, drive through tunnels of trees and more. Every step is stunning so absorb the view and take it all in. The 35 miles per hour speed limit allows us the opportunity to truly enjoy the ride with all the views offered. Later today, we arrive in Charlottesville, Virginia where we will check in at our local hotel followed by a delicious included dinner at one of Charlottesville’s restaurants. (B, D)
October 13 – Breakfast included. This morning we will arrive at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the home that Jefferson designed and built for himself and his family. We will tour inside the home of our third president which is an architectural masterpiece filled with his own inventions. You will marvel at the plantation, grounds and gardens during our visit. Be sure to dress comfortable today so you can partake in everything that Monticello has to offer. We will once again step back in time for a complete 18th century experience with an included lunch at Michie Tavern (located next to Monticello) complete with delicious southern fare. The historic Michie Tavern once served as the social center of its community and accommodated travelers with food, drink and lodging. This Virginia Landmark completely captures 18th century life with servers dressed in period attire serving delicious and hearty meals in a rustic tavern setting – truly a great experience. Departure for home after lunch as we enjoy more fall scenery en route home. (B, L)
