You're always asking us for "New Tours" ... and a few years ago we introduced you to FOUR of the South's most scenic, fascinating, and interesting destinations, all in one grand trip! Each group who's taken it say it's a Total Winner! So here it is again .. at the perfect time of year when the crowds have thinned out, the weather is settling down, and yet everything is still beautiful and waiting to show off it's Southern Charm just for you! We've chosen outstanding highlights in each area, so don't miss your chance to come along this year ~ we're gonna' have another GREAT time!!
DAYS ONE & TWO: Our first day of travel finds us getting acquainted with our new Gad-About travel friends and overnighting in the Mooresville, North Carolina area. The next day we finish our journey to the "Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands", Beaufort, South Carolina. A local guide will take us on a narrated tour of Historic Beaufort, a city of lordly and striking mansions of pre-Revolutionary and pre-Civil War eras. Step back in time to recapture a history dating as far back as the 1500's! Blending warm southern hospitality with its interesting chronology, the magic of Beaufort can be felt through the breeze in the Palmetto fronds, can be heard in the hum of passing boats along the Intracoastal Waterway and can be seen in the classic architecture of regal antebellum homes. Beaufort is also known for the major motion pictures made there, including The Big Chill, The Great Santini, Prince of Tides and Forrest Gump. Visit Saint Helena's Episcopal Church built in 1724, and see its unique churchyard portraying the parish's 265 years of history.
Our time in this area includes a visit to Parris Island Marine Base located five miles south of Historic Beaufort. It's rich history dates back to the mid 1500's when Spanish and French explorers clashed on the Island's shores as they sought a strategic foothold in the New World. Today it is one of the main recruit training stations for the United States Marine Corp. Under the watchful eyes of the Drill Instructors, some 20,000 men and 2,000 women complete their training at Parris Island each year. Highlights of our visit will be the Iwo Jima Monument, the Parade Field and the Parris Island Museum which was listed in the Top 20 visitor attractions in South Carolina - Wonderful! We'll depart Beaufort and head to the Savannah area for overnight, with dinner included upon arrival. (1B, 1L, 1D)
DAY THREE: Away we go to Amelia Island to meet our local guide who will lead us on a Trolley Tour of this beautiful island! Discovered in 1562, Amelia Island is located just off the coast of northeast Florida. With 13-miles of beautiful beaches, abundant native wildlife, and pristine waters, this barrier island has long been a beloved destination for visitors and residents alike. Amelia was voted #5 among the Top 10 North American Islands by Conde Nast Traveler's 2010 Reader's Choice Awards. We'll stop at Kingsley Plantation and learn about Anna Kinsley, the first black woman in Florida to own 3 plantations and her own slaves. Continuing on to St. Augustine, the nation's oldest city, we check into our hotel for 2 nights, and prepare for a lovely dinner at the Reef Restaurant with fabulous ocean views! During dessert, you'll enjoy a production of "The Tattler", St. Augustine's Victorian society newspaper - hear all the juicy gossip, provided by you - FUN!
DAY FOUR: This morning we head out for a wonderful guided tour of St. Augustine. Over 430 years of history are highlighted as you travel through ancient streets to view buildings dating to the 1700's. Learn of several failed attempts to take over the colony and how the colonists struggled against fire, disease and threats from neighboring colonies. See the vast British influence on architecture. Experience the Guilded Age of the wealthy Henry Flagler Era in the 1800's. You'll see two of his grand hotels and the Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church, built in memory of Flagler's daughter, Jenny Louise. No visit to St. Augustine is complete without a visit to the world-famous Fountain of Youth! Everyone gets to take a drink from the fabled fountain that Ponce de Leon was searching for - prepare to turn into a hip-hoppin', bubble gum-chewing teeny-bopper with the first swallow!! (okay, just kidding!). You'll enjoy seeing the planetarium show that exhibits how the Conquistadors used the stars to navigate their way to the new world. Spend time as a "turn-of-the-century shopper" in the Oldest Store Museum. View thousands of items that were originally sold in the C F Hamblen Hardware Store as many of the "modern gadgets" are demonstrated for your entertainment! Enjoy free time on St. George Street to get lunch and stroll along the bay front, or perhaps explore some of the side streets that are hidden treasures of the historic district - how delightful! A visit to the San Sebastian Winery for an audio-visual presentation and tour of the wine-making process is next. For those interested, a little local wine tasting will be available at the end! Then we'll hear "Ahoy, mateys! as we depart from the St. Augustine Municipal Marina. Settle in for a pleasurable cruise along the Intercoastal Waterway to view numerous historic and natural sights along the St. Augustine waterfront and beautiful Matanzas Bay. Dinner at a local favorite restaurant tops off and excellent day of touring! (B, D)
DAY FIVE: The fun's far from over as we say good-bye to St. Augustine and head north to Savannah, Georgia, considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with cobblestone streets, manicured gardens and oak-shaded parks drizzling with silvery Spanish Moss. Experience the history and architecture as your local guide takes you through the historic district aboard the comfort of our motorcoach while enjoying the colorful tales that surround Georgia's 'First City'. Special treats will be an "up close and personal" tour of one of the beautiful southern homes and a visit to the exquisite Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. After your tour, enjoy some free time on cobblestone Historic River Street with it's many quaint stores. Later, we'll journey to Mooresville, North Carolina for our overnight. (B)
