Invented to accomplish the impossible, the Shay logging locomotive was engineered to climb the steepest grades, swing around hairpin curves and negotiate frail temporary tracks. These working artifacts remain useful today as priceless and almost antique relics of the grand days of logging by rail. The Cass Scenic Railroad is the same line built in 1901 to haul lumber to the mill in Cass and many of the locomotives are the same Shay locomotives used for more than a half-century. Enjoy a round trip journey from Cass to Whittaker Station, the site of a recreated logging camp of the 1940's which exhibits both the living quarters and the tools of the loggers. Our day also includes a stop at the New River Gorge, which continues to carve the deepest and longest river gorge in the Appalachian Mountains. Climb aboard for an excursion that is filled with rich histories of the past, unparalleled views, and close-up encounters with the sights and sounds of original steam-driven locomotives.
