Day 2:

Press on through West Virginia before entering the Appalachian Mountain region. Welcome to the Outer Banks region of North Carolina, “Where Dreams Still Take Flight”. This incredible peninsula is home to lighthouses that have guarded the region for centuries and is home to the tallest sand dunes on the East Coast! Spend the next four nights listening to the sounds of the Atlantic ocean from your oceanfront balcony!

Day 3:

Wright Brothers National Memorial: Stories of the “brothers” depicted through exhibits, full-scale reproductions of their 1902 glider, 1903 flying machine and first wind tunnel. Living quarters and hanger are reconstructed along with the flight line and take-off point for their first successful powered flight.

Jockey’s Ridge State Park: Site of the tallest natural sand dunes in the Eastern United States where shifting winds are constantly reshaping the dunes. A phenomenal natural attraction in the Outer Banks!

Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse: Perched on the waterfront in Manteo, NC, this recreated lighthouse was originally built in 1877 and decommissioned in 1955.

The Elizabethan Gardens: Docent led walking tour of these elaborate gardens designed as a living memorial to Queen Elizabeth. Displays include hydrangeas, camellias, herbs and coastal species. Take special note of the Sunken Gardens and Overlook Terrace.

Day 4:

Cape Hatteras National Seashore: Witness the natural and remote piece of beach left on the eastern seaboard stretching over 70-miles from Bodie Island to Hatteras, once dubbed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for its treacherous currents and storms. Hear stories related to shipwrecks and lighthouses, through the knowledge and expertise of a local guide.

Bodie Island Lighthouse: Horizontally-striped 156-foot tall structure dates back to 1872 with its beacon flashing 19-miles over the ocean.

Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station: One of the most complete U.S. Life-Saving Stations in the nation which preserves, protects, and interprets the rich history of valiant men and their dedication.

Graveyard of the Atlantic: Rich maritime history of the Outer Banks displayed and told through shipwreck artifacts, memorabilia, dramatic tales from 1524 through 1945.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: Tallest brick beacon in the world standing 210 feet. First lit in December 1870, the iconic spiral-striped landmark serves as a warning to mariners of the shifting sandbars.

Day 5:

Currituck Beach Lighthouse: Fresnel lens of this lighthouse began flashing on December 1, 1875, and mwas the last brick lighthouse built on the Outer Banks.

The Whalehead Club: On the grounds of Currituck Heritage Park this restored 1925 historic house was built as a private residence by a wealthy industrialist for him and his wife who were avid waterfowl hunters.

Wild Horses —“Number 1 Thing to do in the Outer Banks”: Board an open-air vehicle with a local guide along the dunes of the Atlantic to witness the Colonial Spanish Wild Mustangs of Corolla, NC. Private access into a conservation easement provides viewing and history of the horses. Plus, photo opportunities for sights you won't believe!

Day 6:

Depart the Outer Banks with fond memories of a sea shore dotted with lighthouses and the richness of its maritime history. We travel northbound into Virginia for a special attraction.

Battleship Wisconsin BB-64: Arrive in Norfolk, Virginia and climb aboard the largest and last Battleship built by the U.S. Navy. The USS Wisconsin was active in landings in Iwo Jima and Okinawa, World War II, Korean War and Operation Desert Storm. Stroll the main and second deck and view the officers mess area, berths, chapel, and radio room.

Day 7:

The lure of the sea leaves a calming effect on one’s perspective, as we travel back to our home towns, reminisce with fellow travel partners favorite sites and landmarks visited during this journey.
